Nonuttin’ Foods Inc. was created by the parents of a food allergic child. As such, we strive to be clear about what allergens are in the ingredients we use and what our manufacturing setup is.
We want you to feel comfortable about choosing Nonuttin' products. If you have any questions about our lines or allergens, please feel free to contact us toll free at 1-866-714-5411 or by email at info@nonuttin.com .
ALLERGENS AND GLUTEN
While nobody can guarantee a level of zero risk; we have created strict allergen protocols to offer you products you can trust:
We have outlined below the top 11 common food allergens and gluten but have also added additional allergens that have been declared by our ingredient suppliers.
TOP ELEVEN ALLERGENS and GLUTEN
Dairy
No ingredients containing dairy are used in the Nonuttin' facility. This includes all derivatives such as casein or whey. The Nonuttin’ facility is certified Kosher pareve through BC Kosher.
Eggs
No ingredients containing eggs are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Fish
No ingredients containing fish are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Gluten
All of our products are certified Gluten Free by the Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO) which has a standard of 10 parts per million (ppm). You will see the GF symbol on each package in the USA.
In Canada, Nonuttin’ products without pure oats will show the GFCO certification label.
The Canadian Celiac Association and Health Canada recognize pure oats as a healthful addition to most gluten free diets although they may not be labeled gluten free under current law. This law is currently under review by Health Canada which includes a proposal to allow pure oats to be labeled as gluten free.
Until that change, Canadian Nonuttin’ granola bars and granolas that contain pure oats are labeled as wheat, barley and rye free.
Mustard
No ingredients containing mustard are used in the Nonuttin' facility
Peanuts
No ingredients containing peanut are used in the Nonuttin' facility. All Nonuttin' staff members sign contracts to ensure they do not eat peanut products before work or bring them into any area of the Nonuttin' facility, including the lunchroom.
Sesame
No ingredients containing sesame are used in the Nonuttin’ facility.
5 products do have a “may contain sesame” on their label due to sesame monitoring we are doing on 3 ingredients used in these 5 products: Raw Sunflower Seeds, Fruit Explosion Trail Mix, Berry Delight Trail Mix, Blueberry Maple Granola, and Cranberry Apple Granola.
For more details, please see the letter regarding this issue from the founders, Rob and Alana Elliott.
Shellfish
No ingredients containing shellfish (including crustaceans) are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Soy
Soy lecithin is present on the granola line in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and 70% dark chocolate chunks as a fat emulsifier.
Soybeans are packaged on the trail mix/ingredient line along with the 70% dark chocolate chunks pouches and semi-sweet mini chocolate chip pouches which contain soy lecithin.
Soy cross contamination is a possibility with all products at Nonuttin' Foods Inc. Because of this, you will see soy allergen declarations on all of our products.
Sulfites
No ingredients containing sulfite preservatives are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Tree nuts - (i.e. almonds, cashews, pecans).
No ingredients containing tree nuts are used in the Nonuttin' facility. All Nonuttin' staff members sign contracts to ensure they do not eat tree nut products before work or bring them into any area of the Nonuttin' facility, including the lunchroom.
Wheat
No ingredients containing wheat are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
ADDITIONAL ALLERGENS
Please note that if you have a food allergy that is not a top 11 food allergen, it may not be declared by our ingredient suppliers. Since these items are not Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) identified top 11 food allergens, not all suppliers may be able to verify their own supply chain for these additional allergens and therefore these must be considered voluntary declarations that may not be complete. Nonuttin' Foods does not add May contain: warnings for any of these ingredients.
Celery seed
The natural flavoring we use in the granolas is made for us by a manufacturer who uses celery seed on the same line. The manufacturer's written declaration is that celery is not present in the natural flavoring.
Corn
Corn is present on the granola bar and chocolate/trail mix production lines in the dark chocolate chunks in the form of anhydrous dextrose, a corn-based sugar.
The flavoring used in the chocolate chips and chunks as well as the granolas has an ethyl alcohol base that is corn derived. The manufacturer of the ethyl alcohol states that no corn protein should remain after the alcohol distillation process.
Please note that all agricultural crops in North America, can be cross contaminated with corn due to farming practices.
Coconut
Canada does not list coconut as a tree nut but the USA does. In any case, we treat coconut as a tree nut declaration with all of our suppliers. No ingredients containing coconut are used in the Nonuttin’ facility.
Flavors
All Nonuttin' granolas have flavors added to them that are indicated on the ingredient list as "natural flavor". Please note that we do not add any additional flavors that are not already indicated in the name of the product. The kinds of flavors used are as follows:
Vanilla Cinnamon Granola: Vanilla
Vanilla Caramel Granola: Vanilla
Blueberry Maple Granola: Maple
Cranberry Apple Granola: Apple
Additionally, we closely adhere to all food allergen labeling regulations and would declare any of the top 11 allergens on the allergen warning if the flavors were to contain a top food allergen.
Latex
No latex gloves are used on any Nonuttin' production line. We use only medical grade, powder-free nitrile gloves.
Sunflower
Sunflower seeds are present in the Nonuttin’ facility on the trail mix and granola/oatmeal lines.
Sunflower oil is present in small amounts on the cranberries and blueberries and may have potential traces on the dried apples which are present on all 3 lines (granola bars, granolas/oatmeals, trail mixes).
MANUFACTURING SET-UP
The Nonuttin' facility is organized into three separate lines: the granola bar line, the granola/oatmeal line and the chocolate/seeds/trail mix line. These three lines are not separated by walls.
Manufacturing schedules are set up to minimize cross contamination but it may not be completely avoided.
The Granola Bar Line
This line produces and packages all granola bars (raisin, apple cinnamon, chocolate chip and double chocolate chunk). This line also creates the base recipe for our granolas (vanilla cinnamon, vanilla caramel, blueberry maple and cranberry apple granola).
After the base granola is created, all granolas are moved to another line for packaging and for the addition of the blueberries and cranberries (blueberry maple and cranberry apple granolas only). See The Granola Packaging Line below.
There may be cross contamination between the different granola bar and base granola varieties.
Ingredients used on this line include: pure oats, crisp rice, brown rice syrup, organic evaporated cane juice, 100% pure expeller pressed canola oil, semi-sweet chocolate chips, 70% dark chocolate chunks, diced dried apples, cinnamon, organic cocoa, raisins, maple sugar chunks and natural flavorings (vanilla, maple, apple).
The Granola/Oatmeal Line
Once the base granola is created for all 4 varieties (vanilla cinnamon, vanilla caramel, blueberry maple and cranberry apple), it is transferred to the separate granola cooling and packaging area. This is also the area where the blueberries and cranberries are stored and added to their respective granola bases.
As of January 2012, a new product, instant oatmeal cups, has been added to this line.
Ingredients on this line: dried blueberries, dried cranberries, oats, raisins, organic evaporated cane juice, organic cinnamon, sea salt, dried apples and raw sunflower seeds.
The Chocolate/Seeds/Trail Mix Line
This line produces and/or packages all trail mixes and baking ingredients including chocolate chips, chocolate chunks and raw sunflower seeds. This area has a separate access point and staff protective clothing dedicated to this line to minimize cross contamination with other lines.
Cross contamination between all products on this line is possible.
The ingredients used on this line are: Semi-sweet chocolate chips, 70% dark chocolate chunks, cherry fruit chips, diced dried apples, dried blueberries, dried cranberries, raisins, 100% pure expeller pressed canola oil, sea salt, raw sunflower seeds, and dry roasted soybeans.
This declaration is accurate at January 11, 2012 but may change without further notice. Please read ingredient labels every time.
